    Date: October 29, 2026

Location: Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa, Syria

Heavy rainfall and flash floods have swept across several parts of Syria, triggering emergency rescues, forcing hundreds of families to leave flood-hit camps, and damaging roads, bridges and public facilities. Video published by Al Jazeera on October 29 showed several men being rescued from a vehicle stranded in floodwater in Deir ez-Zor.

According to Syria’s state news agency, SANA, the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management reported that rescue teams had saved 15 civilians and evacuated approximately 375 families from affected camps. Emergency teams were responding to incidents across Aleppo, Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor, Hama, Homs and Latakia.

    Vehicles Trapped and Roads Disrupted

Floodwater overwhelmed sections of roads, leaving vehicles stranded and making travel dangerous. Videos also showed disruptions along routes connecting Raqqa and Aleppo.

The ministry reported that seven bridges, culverts and unpaved roads had become unusable because of the flooding. Three bridges crossing seasonal waterways in Deir ez-Zor and its surrounding countryside were also taken out of service.

Emergency crews have been working to remove floodwater, clear drainage channels, restore access to damaged roads and assist people trapped by rising water.

Hundreds of Families Leave Flood-Hit Camps

In the Raqqa countryside, approximately 375 families left the Sahlat al-Banat, al-Younani and al-Maqass camps after floodwater entered the sites.

More than 100 families were also estimated to have been affected in the Kasrat Surour area, where the collapse of an earthen drainage crossing left residents surrounded by floodwater.

Rescue and drainage operations extended beyond residential areas. According to the ministry’s report carried by SANA, teams pumped water from more than 150 homes and public facilities, including two hospitals, schools and bakeries.

One Fatality Reported in Raqqa Countryside

The ministry reported one death in a traffic accident in western Raqqa countryside, based on preliminary information. Emergency services received more than 350 weather-related reports, with authorities prioritising incidents involving immediate threats to life.

Thunderstorms, hail and strong wind gusts affected several provinces, increasing the risk of flash floods and further disruption.

    Emergency Operations Continue

Authorities said rescue and recovery work was continuing as teams dealt with damaged infrastructure and blocked routes. Officials have also raised preparedness levels in areas where further heavy rainfall is possible.

The situation remains subject to change as emergency teams assess damage and respond to new reports. Residents and travellers should follow local emergency instructions and avoid attempting to drive or walk through fast-moving floodwater.
